Projects 2010-2011
Besides concerts and performances in the Oslo region and at the Cahtedral of Fredrikstad on June 2nd, the choir has been invited to sing during celebration of the St.Olaf Days in Rome, Italy, October 2010. Two performances in central Rome are scheduled. Details will follow.
Among projects in the pipeline for 2011 are two performances of Mozart's Requiem in April, in collaboration with Borg Cathedral Choir and the early music orchestra Barokkanerne. Information on ticket sales and events to be announced later.
Celebrate 10 Years of Choir Music!
The choir can look back on 10 years of vocal music and performances. Established in 1999, the choir's audience has increased steadily. New music and premier performances have attracted new listeners, while old choral classics have sustained a solid core in the choir's expanding repertoire. To celebrate our 10th anniversary, Majorstua Kammerkor gave a jubilee concert looking back, and not least forward, at Majorstuen kirke, Oslo, Saturday 24 October 2009.
Audio CD
The choir recently published its first audio-CD Pulchra with contemporary Norwegian a cappella works by composer Ola Gjeilo. The CD is available through music stores and web-shops such as iTunes.
Tour to Edinburgh 2009
- Thursday 21 May, Evening Concert at Rosslyn Chapel
- Saturday 23 May, Lunchtime Concert at St. Giles Cathedral
The choir and Director Tore Erik Mohn brought along an energetic mix of classical and Nordic vocal music, including contemporary Norwegian composers such as Ola Gjeilo and Henrik Ødegaard.
Premier Performance
In collaboration with the Nova Chamber Choir in Oslo, Majorstua Kammerkor commissioned a Latin Mass Sunrise from the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. The work is written for a double choir accompanied by strings, and premiered on
2 November 2008 in Majorstuen Church, Oslo. The project was supported by the Arts Council, Norway.
Rome 2007
In late April/early May, the choir ventured on a four day tour to Rome. Two concerts were conducted and the choir also participated in the celebration of Mass in two Roman churches. In addition to the various congregations, the choir aimed at reaching an audience of Norwegian-Italian circles, local concert goers and musicians, and not least the choral society of Rome.
Performances
The first concert took place in the remarkable basilica San Carlo al Corso, home to the Norwegian altar of St. Olav. The second
performance was in the strikingly beautiful Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica. The choir also participated during Mass at
both churches.
From Grieg to Gjeilo
The tour's overall aim was to bring contemporary Norwegian choral music to a wider audience. Marking the centennial anniversary
of Edvard Grieg in 2007, the music brought along to Rome reflected how traditions in Nordic choral compositions have been preserved over the years,
while at the same time showing the novelty and distinction found in the sounds of 21st century Norway.
